Helping Hands of Springfield is a non-profit organization whose mission is "...to shelter the homeless, provide support, promote independence and work with others in the prevention of homelessness in the community."

Open seven days a week, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, Helping Hands provides its clients with the basic necessities:

to help those who are able to take steps to move themselves out of poverty and homelessness to lives of independence, self-respect and hope.

Helping Hands also offers transitional housing for people who are formerly homeless, living in recovery, and employed.

Growing concern in 1989 over the number of homeless in Springfield led the Greater Springfield Interfaith Association, local service providers and the Ministerial Alliance, to join in seeking a solution to the problem.

The result was the creation of Helping Hands.

Early responses to homelessness focused primarily on emergency services - providing the basic necessity of food and shelter. But the problem of homelessness was far too complex to be solved by emergency measures alone.

Over the years, Helping Hands has addressed the barriers that stand in the way of clients' efforts to overcome poverty and homelessness.

At Helping Hands, we offer our clients a ladder of opportunity by teaching them the skills they need to obtain jobs, housing, further education or simply lives independent of shelters and institutions.
